After this advertisement More News Narendra Modi government has emphasized on buying domestically made weapons and military equipment in order to build a self-reliant India.
Defense Acquisition Committee (DAC) chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday approved the decision to purchase arms and military equipment worth around Rs 29,000 crore made in India.
It is considered to be a 'major step' towards self-reliance in defence. Sources in the Ministry of Defense said that this step was taken in accordance with the decision of the Union Cabinet on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Only a few years after becoming Prime Minister, Modi had promised to change India's old policy on arms and military hardware.
A few months ago, the Ministry of Defense said, that objective has been largely met. It was reported that 64 per cent of the total budget allocation for arms and military equipment in the fiscal year 2021-22 was targeted for spending on domestic production. But 65.5 percent has been spent beyond that. In that financial year, 99.5 percent of the allocation for arms and military equipment has been spent, the Ministry of Defense said.
Besides, the Modi government had been proactive a few years ago to cut the import of defense equipment with the aim of building a self-reliant India. A fresh review of imports of arms and defense equipment from abroad has begun with a view to turning India from an 'arms importing country' to an 'arms exporting country'.
Modi had last year decided to ban the import of 101 defense equipment in the first phase to make India self-reliant in defense production. Govt. To reduce foreign dependence, it was decided to impose a step-by-step ban on the import of various types of rifles, missiles, cannons, drones, from light helicopters used in war to heavy cargo aircraft.
This time the campaign to fill that 'vacuum' started with the decision to buy domestic weapons and equipment.
